A Brief History

The Doire Calgach Singers was formed initially by Paul McKeever in Derry in  November 1996. When he asked the since retired principal of Nazareth House  Primary School, Sr Bernadine, if she would allow him to rehearse in the school she generously agreed. Thus began our relationship with the school and Nazareth House Home.

Early in the year 2000 we were extremely fortunate to acquire as musical director the services of Trevor Burnside who is widely acknowledged to be one of the most talented musicians this city has ever produced. Under his expert guidance The Doire Calgach Singers has grown and developed into a mature, accomplished, entertaining and versatile choir with a wide repertoire which appeals to a variety of different tastes in music.

Now in our fifteenth year we are looking forward to a very busy sequence of performances including The City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival at the end of April, the “Legenderry Concert” in mid May, a wedding in July and more. See our Future Events page for up to date listing.

In November 2006 we were invited to stage a full concert for the Women’s Institute in the Queen’s Hall in Newtownards, the proceeds of which would go towards the renewal of the roof tiles on Federation House, the W.I’s headquarters in Belfast. Soloists and instrumentalists from within the choir’s membership added further variety to the evening’s entertainment. The W.I realised £2,600 that evening.

W.I. Concert

Sean Mulrine, Director of The Padre Pio Centre for N. Ireland, asked the choir to sing at the Prayer Group’s 21st Anniversary Christmas mass at 8 o’clock on Monday 4th December 2006 in Nazareth House. We also sang there at the Christmas vigil mass having earlier that evening sung at the vigil in St Patrick’s, Pennyburn. We continue to sing for the Padre Pio Group every year.

In December 2003 the choir launched their CD, “A Choral Odyssey”, to raise funds for the Foyle Hospice and that support is continued by singing at the annual “Light up the Lights” service at 8pm on 14th December

Our CD

Sadly over the years a number of the Doire Calgach members have passed away and the choir has all too frequently been privileged to sing at their requiem masses.  On 26th February 2007 we sang at a special memorial service for all of the deceased and their friends and family
